Hokti Sampson is Daniel's mother and Willie Jack's aunt.
History[]
Willie Jack's Visit[]
Hokti's son, Daniel, died by suicide. After his death, she and her husband, Danny split up and Hokti ended up in jail.
Hokti spent much of her time in jail avoiding Gram, one of her ancestors who was trying to get Hokti to work on herself. Hokti was in her cell when a guard told her she had a visitor who wasn't on her list. She asked for the name and learned it was her niece, Willie Jack.
Hokti got ready and went to the visiting room, where Willie Jack was waiting for her. They hugged awkwardly, then sat down. Willie Jack updated her on everyone back home and said her parents tried to talk her out of coming. After some more small talk, Willie Jack pulled out an envelope which contained a letter Daniel had written to his future self as a freshman. Hokti said she didn't want it and Willie Jack asked if she could read it to her. She hadn't read it herself yet. Hokti wasn't interested and said that's why no one in the family was on her visitors list. Looking at them just reminded her of Daniel. When the conversation stalled, Hokti indicated that food often helped people open up and gestured to the vending machines. Willie Jack got up and got them snacks.
When she came back with the snacks, Willie Jack explained that Elora and Bear weren't speaking to each other and Cheese almost never hung out with them anymore. Hokti said sometimes friends grow apart, but Willie Jack knew that wasn't it. They were all shrouded in darkness since Daniel died. Hokti decided to pray with Willie Jack, calling on their ancestors for help. When they finished, she said she'd spent a lot of time trying to fix Danny, but learned you can't love someone out of hurting themselves. She told Willie Jack to create the space for her friends and it would work or it wouldn't. She reminded her also that food helped people open up. As Willie Jack got up to leave, Hokti told her to take the letter, as it had made its way to her.
When Hokti went back to her cell, she added Willie Jack to her visitors list.[1]
Fixico's Death[]
When Old Man Fixico died, Willie Jack came to the jail to tell Hokti about it. Hokti helped Willie Jack learn how the ripples Fixico left in the community would keep him alive for a long time and how she could learn from his example and help her community as well. She told Willie Jack it was her responsibility to take care of the people he left behind.[2]
