Deer Lady is a spirit who kills unsavory men.
History[]
Childhood[]
As a child, Deer Lady was kidnapped and imprisoned at a Native boarding school. There, she met and bonded with Koda Littlebird, another child who had been there for a year. She watched as other children were dragged off at night. When Koda was dragged away, Deer Lady followed. Sister Jenson, one of the nuns, saw her watching and chased her as she ran out of the school and into the woods. In the woods, Deer Lady came upon a doe who offered her help. Deer Lady accepted and the doe made her into Deer Lady. Then she killed Sister Jenson.[1]
Meeting Big[]
Deer Lady was in a corner store when two men came in to rob the place. Deer Lady didn't retreat when warned and instead killed both the robbers. Then she went into the bathroom, where young Big Hill had been stranded with no toilet paper and handed him some, allowing him to see her hooves under the door. Later, when Big's grandmother died, Deer Lady went to the funeral and told Big that he had no reason to fear her as she only killed bad men and he was good. All he had to do was stay that way, despite temptations to do things differently.[2]
Saving Big and Kenny Boy[]
Years later, when Midstreamers kidnapped Big and Kenny Boy and zip tied them to a tree, Deer Lady came and killed the guard watching them and then freed them. She asked Kenny Boy if he'd been good. He said no, but he was trying. She told Big that Cookie had told her he was in trouble. She hugged him and told him to take care of Kenny Boy and keep being good.[3]
Getting Revenge[]
Much later, Deer Lady decided to get revenge on James Minor, who had killed Koda and was now an old man. On her way to his house, she met Bear Smallhill at a diner and offered to give him a ride home after making a stop along the way. She had Bear stay in the car while she went inside and killed James by stabbing him repeatedly in the back. Then she drove Bear home to Okern, still covered in James's blood. When she dropped him off, she told Bear not to worry about becoming his dad because his mom had taken care of that. She also told him to keep smiling because they couldn't take that from him.[1]
Relationships[]
Familial[]
She told Koda that her only family was her grandfather.[1]
Friendships[]
She and Koda Littlebird became friends during their time together at a Native boarding school. When James Minor killed Koda, she avenged his death.[1]
Notes and Trivia[]
- Outside the universe of Reservation Dogs, Deer Lady is a real spirit in Native American mythology.[4]
