Letter to His Future Self[]
As a freshman, Daniel wrote a letter to his future self as part of a class assignment. He talked about his dream of going to California for spring break as well as his feelings for Elora.[1]
Hunting[]
Daniel often went hunting with his uncle Leon and cousin Willie Jack. During these hunts, Leon got irritated with Daniel joking around in the woods. Daniel said it was because he got bored and they never actually got anything. At some point, Willie Jack and Daniel decided they wanted to kill a large buck they named Chunk, but they never did before Daniel died.[2]
Death[]
One night, Daniel was walking home with his friends. When they got to Daniel's house, they could all hear fighting from inside, so Elora suggested they go for a walk. Bear, Cheese, and Willie Jack couldn't, so Elora and Daniel went off together. They ended up outside a bar, where Daniel tried to break into some cars until Elora persuaded him to go inside with her.
Inside, they danced and drank. After some time, Elora was ready to go home, but Daniel wasn't. After he bumped into an older man and yelled at him, they ended up outside. Daniel walked away, but Elora knew he wasn't going home because his home was in the opposite direction. He admitted that he couldn't go home because of the fighting, so he was just going to walk around. She offered that he could text her if he needed anything. Before she left, he asked if she'd ever go to California with him as he'd always wanted to go. She told him she would.
The next morning, Elora found Daniel's body hanging at their hideout after an apparent suicide.[3]
