Synopsis[]

Cheese goes on a ride along with Big.

Plot[]

Okern, Oklahoma
1984

Bunnie Tiger races down the road, smoking and singing along with the radio. He skids to a stop and turns around to go back for a hitchhiker. She tells him she's headed to Carnegie. She has family there. She understands if it's too far, but he says he'll take her. As she goes to get in, she pulls out a weapon and he doesn't see that or that she has hooves instead of feet. Young Big watches as they drive away.

Adult Big gets out of his car and gestures for Cheese to get in. He tells Cheese to get in the back, but Cheese protests that he's not a criminal.

Cheese thought Chubs was doing the ride-along, but Chubs called in sick so Cheese is stuck with Big. Big's radio is broken, but he says he's got a new cruiser on the way with a new radio. He's going to call it Redbone 2. The one they're in is Redbone 1. Cheese doesn't know the band they're named after. Big says it was before his time. They're an all-Indian band and it's the only tape Big plays. Big starts singing Come and Get Your Love. Cheese doesn't recognize the song.

Big takes Cheese to the Orpheum. Outside, Bucky is asleep on a bench. Big wakes him up. Big asks if he's sleeping on the street now. He says no, that he and Bethany live just up the street now. Bucky thinks she's mad at him though. When Big asks what he did, Bucky just says she's a white woman. Bucky sat down to read a book and fell asleep. Cheese asks where his book is. He looks around dramatically and says someone must have stolen it. Big offers him a ride and something to eat, but he declines. Cheese introduces himself and Big says he's on a ride-along because he wants to be a lighthorseman. Cheese says he really wants to be a detective, but you have to start at the bottom. Bucky has to get going, but he says if Big sees someone carrying a book on string theory, it's his. As they go to leave, an Okern cop car pulls up and Marion expresses surprise that they haven't fired Big yet. Big says he's showing Cheese the ropes. Joe Bob tells Cheese not to listen to a word Big says. Big says they're old football buddies of his from back in high school. Marion asks if Big is still driving the grandma car. Big says his car is on back order. Marion and Joe Bob offer their backup if he needs it. Big says those are the kind of guys who turn out to be detectives. That's Cheese's future if he's not careful. He needs to be a lighthorseman.

Big and Cheese arrive at a field where Big found a bunch of catfish heads. A couple days later, they're gone. Then a week goes back and they're back. He thinks it's Bigfoot activity. Cheese doesn't believe in Bigfoot, which Big says makes him sound like a white person. Just because you can't see something doesn't make it less real. Bigfoot is a spirit who doesn't want to be seen. He just disappears. Big points out what looks like a footprint to him, but Cheese doesn't agree. Big asks if he really wants to be a cop or is he just trying to get out of school for the day. Cheese corrects that he wants to be a detective. Cheese asks what made Big want to become a lighthorseman and Big says that's personal and he's never told anyone. Cheese asks what he does as a lighthorseman. He says he hunts bad guys. Around here, it's usually meth heads and copper thieves. There's overlap there. Sometimes he deals with the supernatural, like the catfish heads. He's seen a lot of things you can't explain.

Young Big draws a picture of the Deer Lady. His grandma Imajene asks him to go to the store when he's finished to pick her up some cigarettes. If there's change, he can get himself a sucker.

On the way to the store, Big's stomach starts rumbling. He enters the store, passing a missing person poster for Bunnie Tiger. He goes to the counter, where he buys the cigarettes from Big Murph. As he tries to decide what to get with the change, his stomach rumbles again and he asks to use the restroom. Big Murph points him toward it.

Allen Williams and another man come into the store with guns. One points his at Big Murph while the other points his at Deer Lady.

In the bathroom, Big realizes there's no toilet paper and calls out to Big Murph.

The Deer Lady turns around and doesn't retreat, despite being warned.

Big hears the door open and then sees a pair of hooves under the stall door. The Deer Lady hands him a roll of toilet paper and then leaves.

Big comes out of the bathroom to find the two men dead on the floor as Big Murph wakes up at the counter. Big Murph asks if he saw anything and he says no.

Dispatch sends Big and Cheese to Village 2, saying Ray Ray called in about something. Big knocks on Ray Ray's door. Ray Ray comes to the door smoking a joint and offers Big some, saying it's legal now. Big says it's state legal and he's a federal cop. He makes Ray Ray put it out. Ray Ray has a copper figuring. He says the meth heads are crazy about that stuff. His neighbor had some as well and Auntie Bent got rocks in her mailbox. Big questions the neighbors and gathers the copper figurines.

Big examines one of the figurines in the car. Dispatch radios for him to look out for a baby blue pickup. One was stolen out of someone's yard. Big sees a car with a tail light out, so he has Cheese hold up his phone, which is playing siren to the radio because the siren is broken.

Big checks the trunk while Jackie, Bone Thug Dog, Weeze, and White Steve stand beside the car. He says he got a report about a black car being involved in stealing road signs, but they say it wasn't them. Cheese asks what they've been up to. Jackie asks if he's surprised their car is still running because they know what he did. He claims ignorance.

Cheese, Elora, Willie Jack, and Bear, who are all wearing bandanas over their faces, pour sugar in a gas tank.

Jackie says it was the wrong car and White Steve says Cheese messed up his uncle's car. Big pulls a gun out of the trunk and asks what it is. Jackie says it's a paintball gun. Every Friday, they have paintball wars at the paintball spot. Big puts the gun back. Cheese says they beat up his friend Bear. Bone Thug Dog says he could beat up Cheese, too. Cheese asks if he can spray them with mace for threatening an officer. Big says he's not an officer and it's time for them to go.

Kenny Boy talks about string theory. A book about it is sitting on the table in front of him. Cheese asks him about the copper figurines. Cheese told Big that, as a scrapyard, they probably have a lot of copper coming in and out. Kenny Boy finds the word scrap derogatory. It's a salvage yard. Big shows him one of the figurines and asks if he's seen one before. He says he hasn't. He thinks maybe an artist is trying to get their work out there. Sadly, copper is not their forte. Ansel asks him about the big batch that was stolen. Kenny Boy tries to save face, but Ansel says there was copper by the cockfighting ring. Kenny Boy starts singing to cover up Ansel's talking. Big and Cheese get up and leave.

Big and Cheese are eating when they see a baby blue pickup speed through an intersection, running a red light. Big says that car was called in stolen and goes to follow. The driver doesn't immediately pull over. The driver continues to obey all traffic laws. They think it's Bucky. Cheese uses the radio to tell him to pull over or he'll be shot. Bucky pulls over and moves to the passenger seat. They find a lot of copper in the truck bed. Big asks Bucky what he's doing. Bucky lies and says the driver ran off, but Big already saw him driving. Bucky gets out and Big asks him about the truck being stolen. He says Tammy and Charlene weren't using it, so he wouldn't call it stolen. Big asks him about the copper. Bucky admits to placing the figurines around town. he says they're for protection. It fights diseases like cholera. Old Indians used to wear a lot of it back in the day because it warded off diseases and bad spirits. He and Bethany had the idea to make a bunch of little ones and once people are into it, he shows them the bracelets. Cheese looked up what he said about cholera and he's right. Big asks where he got the copper and he says he stole it from some meth heads. They're messing up the town with meth. Okern has always been a good place to live and they need to get that stuff off the streets so kids like Cheese can have a future. Big tells Bucky to get home and put the truck back where it belongs. And stop putting the figurines around town. Bucky tells Cheese they need him out on the street fighting bad guys like Big. He's one of the good ones. Big asks Bucky to get him one of the bracelets when he gets a chance. Bucky says it's $12, but Big says he's lucky Big didn't arrest him.

Back in the car, Cheese asks why Big didn't arrest Bucky. Big says he's after bad guys and Bucky's a good one. To know which is which, you have to use your detective skills. Cheese thinks maybe being a lighthorseman is pretty cool. Big decides to tell Cheese why he became a lighthorseman, but he can't tell anyone. Cheese says he'll probably tell his friends.

Big attends his grandma's funeral. Deer Lady is there. She says she was friends with his grandmother. They were kids together. Big knows she's the Deer Lady and knows she kills boys. She corrects that she kills bad men. But Big's not bad. He's good. He doesn't have anything to worry about. He just has to stay that way. He'll want to give up and start drinking, have a bunch of kids and never see him, like his own father, but he shouldn't do that. Think about his grandma, imagine her with him, and it'll be all right. She tells him to be good and fight evil. If he does that, he'll never have to see Deer Lady again. Deer Lady tells him to be good and gets in a car to leave.

Cheese says that's kind of like Batman's story, except his parents didn't die and he doesn't have a butler. And he's not rich or as smart as Batman. Cheese is able to get the radio playing Big's Redbone tape. Big sings along. He wants Cheese to sing along, but Cheese doesn't know the song. Cheese slowly joins on the chorus. As they drive, they pass a car that stops to pick up Deer Lady then speeds away.
